Ram Subramaniam
Chairman Mediabrands
Serendipity. Turned a Statistician to an Adman. Started his advertising career as a Media Trainee. And got fired within six months! This motivated him to become the youngest Media Director, within three years, at the grand age of 26. Not wanting to fall prey to “Peter Principle” he did a lateral shift to Strategic Planning. Many Mentors (in Ogilvy, Leo Burnett, McCann Erickson) along the way helped him to succeed in different roles – Client servicing, Heading an office to Regional Director managing Walls and Vaseline brands of Unilever across 18 countries. Then he joined the Dot Com industry and promptly got busted. Another Mentor got him back into Advertising as head of McCann in Sri Lanka. Three years later he returned to the Media side of the Advertising business to head Mediabrands Indonesia. In the last 14 years he transformed a Media department into a Media Powerhouse, pioneered the CPRP based trading norms, and successfully built the business. His passion for Advertising led him to create a start up Communication Agency – ILAB. An Agency that’s sole purpose is to “influence the journey of consumption”. He believes Advertising is all about “Logic with Magic”. He also believes Technology today is blinding the business and taking away the importance of “commonsense” which he calls the sixth sense. Having been a DJ at the age of 19 has taught him how to hold an audience. Avid reading is keeping his grey cells active. A keen golfer so much so he wants to publish a book with the title “Birdie to Bogey”. Indonesia and its people have taught him two invaluable lessons – the power of smiling and saying Terima Kasih.
